Agricultural water use

What I didn't mention in my last blog is that Agriculture uses 81% of the water actually consumed in the U.S. See 2nd link in previous blog. This obviously means that agriculture dominates water usage and even a 10% savings could more than double the water available for domestic use.
What are some ways water can be conserved?
- Increased use of drip irrigation instead of flooding the crops.
- Permaculture methods to store, re-use, and recycle water
- Have a vegetable garden in your backyard.
- Eat lest meat
Eat less meat? Yes, according to a UC study (See http://www.vegansociety.com/html/environment/water/ ) it takes almost 31 times as much water to produce a pound of beef (1680 gallons) as it does a pound of wheat (55 gallons). If we all stopped eating meat, the freshwater consumption by agriculture in the U.S. would go to.81*(.03), about 2.5%, leaving us a huge supply of available fresh water.
So enjoy lots of fresh fruit, have a big salad (without meat), and take another nice long bath.
