Synchronicity
I just finished a book entitled Synchronicity by F. David Peat. It explores Jungian psychology and philosophy, examines world views of different cultures, including a number of Eastern divination practices. He identifies synchronicity with meaning and explores some anecdotes of synchronicity. Synchronicity is a bringing together of events that have meaning without any mechanistic cause.
He then reveals some implications of quantum physics as put forth by David Bohm and others. His conclusion: our world view here in the West is largely based on Newtonian mechanistic thinking> Even though we have gone beyond Newton scientifically with Einstein's relativity and quantum theory. He makes it absolutely clear that we as observers affect the observed. He argues that What we really have, underlying physical reality, are fields of potential from which quantum particles are constantly apprearing and being destroyed. He then theorizes there may be many undiscovered "fields" analogous to Rupert Sheldrake's morphogenetic fields, containing information about the universe and local events, stored holographically.
A fairly easy read, and a fascinating topic. It might change your world view.
Another point he makes is that synchronicity is happening all the time but because of our mechanistic cause-and-effect world view. He also notes that synchronistic events are often life-changing ones. One way I have found to notice synchronicity is to have a favorite number and watch it pop up all over the place, beyond all reason. Here are some of my observations of 11, my favorite number:
I live in and around Douglas, Arizona
- My office is on 1122 G Ave (11 plus 11X2)
- Justin Karpell, who was my daughter's boyfriend for about 7 years, ended up in Douglas, unaware I had property here. He lives on 11th. St.
- I get my hair cut on 11th St.
- My favorite food store is on 11th St.
- I built a website for The Grand THeatre, Douglas. The address for the theatre is 1139 and the toll free number for the raffle is 800-582-1111.
- I have a weekly call with a personal coach every Monday at 11am.
- The land I live on is 11 miles from town.
